Well the 2008 football season is upon us.  You have to be happy about that.  We finally have something to do other than mow the lawn and watch it grow.  Check out my picks on this week’s ACC college football games:

This week’s Picks:

Usc (-19.5) over VIRGINIA

This is a lot of chalk to lay on the road in an opener against a team with a 9-4 record the year before.  However,  if anyone over the last 5 years has shown that they are capable of doing this it’s the USC Trojans.  The Trojans are the program right now.  They lose players to the NFL and graduation and they just reload.  The story will be the same.  Virginia put together one of the more unimpressive 9-4 records a season ago and that will show itself here.  The Cavs only return 11 starters and zero on the defensive line.  That’s going to be a huge problem against the beast that is USC.  Souther California is light on return starters too with 11 of their own but as I explained before,  it has not matter over the last half decade.  USC has covered their last three season openers on the road and have done so in grand fashion (outscored opponents 136-31).  They will handle an outclassed Virginia squad in this one.

Boston College v. Kent St.
Saturday 7:30 P.M.

The Eagles want to build on a succesful 2007 campaign in which they went 11-3 under first year coach Jeff Jagodzinski and won their bowl game against Michigan St.  Things will be a little tough in the early going without Matt Ryan but I fully expect this team to handle their business against Kent St.  Boston College needs some confidence ahead of their game against Georgia Tech and they can build that by getting after Kent St. in a big way.  The Flashes were a 3-9 football team in 2007.  Chances are they will be a better team this year with 15 returning starters but oddsmakers have not done them a favor in this contest.  The number in their favor has been set pretty darn low and that’s likely to fire up the Boston College squad.  Look for the better team to triumph and cover the number.

Alabama v. Clemson
Saturday 8 P.M. est

There is a buzz around Crimson Tide football.  a) because it’s the Crimson Tide and people of Birmingham love their college football and b)  It’s Nick Saban’s second year.  While the Tide may improve over their 7-6 mark in 2007,  I think they are going to start off 2008 with a loss.  Alabama is returing 15 starters but only six on defense.  That defensive unit is going to be under serious attack on Saturday night.  I don’t know that they are experienced and tested enough to withstand the constant barrage.  James Davis and C.J. Spiller will keep Bama on edge.  The Tigers have 14 starters coming back with 7 on each side of the ball.  This includes quarterback Cullen Harper.  In my opinion,  Clemson is more ready to hit the ground running in 2008.  Having this game at home will be huge for the guys in orange.  Their stadium will be rocking and I think their crowd will spur them onto victory.

Wilson Says:  Clemson (-4.5)
