Nevada (-2) over FRESNO ST.
Something smells here. Nevada is 4-4 and Fresno St. is 5-3. Fresno St. beat Nevada at Nevada a season ago. Despite this, Fresno St. failed to be installed as at least a three point favorite in this game and now find themselves as home dogs in this game. Makes me suspicious so I will back Nevada here. The Wolfpack are coming off of a loss to Hawaii two weeks ago and probably had an intense two weeks of preparation. I think that has to pay off in this game. Prior to the Hawaii game which was in Hawaii, Nevada had put up 40 plus points in four straight games. Look for that offense to get back on a roll tonight and hand Fresno St. a loss. The Bulldogs have allowed three straight opponents to rush for over 200 yards and all but three opponents have put up two bills on the ground versus Fresno. Give me Nevada.

Clemson (+4.5) over FLORIDA ST.
3:30 P.M. - est. - Saturday
Florida St. coming off of the loss to Georgia Tech last week will be motivated but that doesn’t always mean you are going to win. The Seminoles are also the solid favorites in this one which puts the pressure on them. Since Tommy Bowden’s departure, the Tigers have played a little more loose and have, as a result, become more dangerous. They got some offensive production last week and will build on that while getting after Florida St.’s young offense. I think this is a field goal game.
Notre Dame (+3.5) over BOSTON COLLEGE
8 P.M. - Saturday
Boston College got caught looking ahead to this game last week and fell to Clemson. Now they are a little deflated and could be upset here again. Notre Dame fell at home versus Pittsburgh and will also have some of the same emotions. However, Notre Dame is the dog and they lost this game at home last year. That makes them the more motivated team and the one I like in this contest. The Fighting Irish are improved and will play better than they did a season ago. Expect them to make adjustments to how Boston College attacked them a season ago and come out ahead in this game.

I was 2-0 in Big East free picks last week picking up winners with West Virginia and Pittsburgh over Notre Dame. There was no Game of the Week last week.

GAME OF THE WEEK YTD: 0-7 (-29.7)
This week’s picks
Cincinnati (+6.5) over WEST VIRGINIA
7 P.M. est. - Saturday - ESPNU
West Virginia has been on a bit of a roll of late winning five in a row including smashing Connecticut. Beating on the Huskies last week probably put more cheese on this line that there should be. The Mountaineers won a close one in Cincinnati last year and can expect another tough battle this season. Cincinnati is 6-2 just like West Virginia and they want revenge for the close loss they suffered last season. They too have played well of late winning five of their last six. I think they have what it takes to stick in there with West Virginia and let the kickers decide who’s best.
Louisville (+6) over PITTSBURGH
12 P.M. est. - Saturday
Expect the Panthers to be a little flat after the big win over Notre Dame. I have probably garnered more wins over the years fading teams the week after they beat Notre Dame than anything else. Pitt is having a good season but they strike me as the kind of team that would struggle to regain focus after a win like last week’s. On top of that, their defense was exposed and Louisville saw that. Look for an upset.

I was 0-2 in free SEC picks last week taking losses with Tennessee and Auburn. On a side note, I was dead on in saying that Phil Fulmer would be let go if he loses to South Carolina. I also won my Game of the Week pick in a big way as Florida romped Georgia.

VANDERBILT (+24) over Florida
8 P.M. est. - Saturday - ESPN
Danger game for Florida. Vanderbilt is not a highly respected team in the SEC. However, they are having a good football season with a 5-3 record. Vandy is also a very scrappy football team. They are not the kind of team that you look at and say wow because they have a bunch of stud athletes. However, they execute play hard and don’t quit. That’s the last thing that Florida needs after a big win over Georgia. The Gators are looking to relax and go through the motions. Vandy won’t let them. The oddsmakers have also asked for a lot here with the point spread and I see the Gators having trouble with this number. Vandy was blown out in this meeting last year and has not forgotten. Take the Commodores.
Alabama (-3) over LSU
3:30 P.M. est. - Saturday - CBS
Have the Crimson Tide messed around with a couple of non-worthy opponents this season? Yes, however, when it has come time to strap it up, the Tide have been able to put the pedal to the floor and put opponents in their place. Ask Georgia. The Tide will be up and ready for this contest and Saban will make sure of it. Say what you will about Nick Saban but the dude can coach some college football. LSU has not shown up for the big ones this season. Both Florida and Georgia kicked this team in the face and there’s no way that Alabama has watched that happen and will fail to do something different. LSU is not on Bama’s level this year and in this game, it will show.

NORTHWESTERN (+11) over Ohio St.
12 P.M.est. - Saturday - ESPN2
Northwestern has not forgotten the beat down they took last year in Columbus 58-7 at the hands of the Buckeyes. That will keep them highly motivated and energized in this game. I have to believe that they really prepared for this encounter and fully intend to take on the Buckeyes and give them all they can handle. Northwestern is an improved team from a season ago. They have already surpassed last season’t win total and their defense has been a big part. Northwestern’s loss to Michigan St. this season is a reminder that they need to show up in the big games. Watch them do that here.
IOWA (+7.5) over Penn St.
3:30 P.M. est. - Saturday - ABC
This is a dangerous game for the Lions. They have been rolling along, they are undefeated and coming off of a big win. On top of that, they had a week off after that big win. Now they come back and they are upset about the polls that saw them get leap frogged by Texas Tech and that’s enough to get them to lose their focus. Now their emphasis will be on trying to blow Iowa out when they are going to have their hands full just getting the win. It’s been a while since Penn St. went to Iowa and the Hawkeyes are both underrated and scrappy. Iowa sees this as a real opportunity and they will be sky high for the game. I have my doubts that Penn St. will match their intensity.

TEXAS TECH (-3.5) over Oklahoma St.
8 P.M. est. - Saturday - ABC
Texas Tech is on a roll. Many will figure that they will have a let down here but I am going to go the opposite way. Texas Tech knows that last week’s win means nothing if they fail here. Tech wants a shot at the national title and after beating Texas they have a strong belief that it can happen. For it to happen, you can’t slip up against one loss Oklahoma St. The Cowboys have a very strong team and will be victims of a very tough conference. Oklahoma St. runs the ball quite well but Texas Tech showed last week that they can defend the run when they need to. Take the Red Rakeers.
Oklahoma v. Texas A&M
2 P.M. est. - Saturday
We all know that Bob Stoops is a choker. This would be one of those situations where one of his teams don’t get it done. Since losing to Texas, they have gone out and smashed three opponents in a row with biggest blowout coming last week in a game against a rival (Nebraska). This is when the Sooners’ heads wil be the biggest and they allow their opponent fight all day long. Texas A&M has got nothing to lose. They will play this game balls to the wall. Last year, the Aggies got blown out in Norman, this year they get the Sooners at home where they came within one point of beating them in 2006. Look for an inspired performance by the Aggies.
Texas (-28) over Baylor
12 P.M. est. - Saturday - Fox Sports Net
Texas took the disappointing loss last week as the weight of their schedule finally caused the collapse against Texas Tech. Now the Longhorns know that to get back into the good graces of the voters, they need some lopsided wins. Baylor presents that opportunity. The Bears are having another losing season and while they have improved, they are still 3-6 and will be treated that way. Look for Texas to be full of emotion and determination in this game as they try to erase last week’s disappointment.

Stanford (+14) over OREGON
3;30 P.M. est - Saturday - Fox Sports Net
This line is wrong. Stanford shows up for their games and they have a 5-4 record by the way. Jim Harbaugh has done a good job over the last two season getting his team ready to play games and this will be no different. He will have plenty of ammo. Last year’s blowout loss at home to Oregon and this year’s double digit underdog disrespect will have the Cardinal flying high come kick off. This one will be nip and tuck.
UCLA (+8) over Oregon St.
6 P.M. est. - Saturday - Fox Sports Net
Sure Oregon St. is having a good season but I don’t know that I can trust them laying more than a touchdown on the road against a conference foe. I don’t know that the Beavers have come that far and have turned that corner. UCLA is a desperate team. They are looking for a win any way that they can get it. I think the Bruins will scrap for everything and make this game quite close.

Browns (-3) over Broncos
The Broncos can’t get out of their own way right now. They have lost three games in a row and and have not looked good. Last week they let the Dolphins come into their house and take them out by a score of 26-17. In that game, the Broncos, who have been the Lord of rushing in the NFL over the last decade, rushed for a mere 14 yards. If the Broncos can’t run the ball, they can’t win. Right now, Denver has too many problems to fix and they rarely get fixed out on the road. I think the oddsmakers are being nice to them here because of rep. I think they continue to struggle. Cleveland has not been a pillar of strength this year either but I think they get a shot in the arm with Brady Quinn getting the start. Cleveland has lost two of their last three but both losses have been by just three points. They are close to turning the corner and I think they take an important step tonight. Take Cleveland and lay the field goal.

I said at the beginning of the NBA season that the Spurs would begin their roll back. I think their time has come and gone and now they will fall back into the pack. The early part of the season has proven this to be true but oddsmakers are continuing to treat them like the Spurs of the past. With this in mind, we find some value in this game tonight. The Spurs are winless and as such, I think they are a poor road favorite. We get a decent amount of points here for our trouble and I like it. Minnesota has been scrappy in their game and quite unlike last season. The Wolves have not allowed an opponent to score more than 96 points and coming off back to back losses, they will be motivated. The Spurs, once a solid defensive basketball team has allowed 100 points per game through their first three. Until they fix that part of their game, they are going to be a poor favorite whether home or away. Look for their struggles to continue and for them to take the loss here.

Miami of Ohio is not having a great season at 2-6. They have lost four of their last five games and to most looking at this, Miami of Ohio doesn’t really have a shot at covering or winning this game. However, things don’t always work that way. Buffalo is having a better season than they have had in years with a record of 4-4. With this being the case it would seem that Buffalo at home would make a good choice but not so fast. Buffalo may be having a good season by their standards but they are not the kind of team to trust this this kind of chalk. Twice this season Buffalo has been a favorite of 7 or more and both times they failed versus the spread. The Bulls have been favorites four times this season and they have only covered three times. Despite the bad season that Miami of Ohio is having they do have a tendency to play games close and they have covered two of their last three games. I like them to stay inside the number tonight.
