Kidd Trade is a Folly!

The failed trade of Jason Kidd from the Nets to the Mavericks is turning out to be kind of funny, at least to me. First, we have a reserve like Devan George blocking the trade. So what does Dallas coach Avery Johnson do to sway George’s opinion and hopefully get him to accept the trade; he plays him 76 minutes over the next two games! Hey Avery, playing the guy more isn’t going to convince him that maybe he should allow himself to be dealt to New Jersey.

What’s funnier than George is Jerry Stackhouse opening his pie hole and saying that he doesn’t mind being traded because he “can rest for 30 days and then when the Nets release me, I’m coming back here (Dallas) fresh”. You see, if the Nets had bought out Stack’s contract, which they were going to do, and released him, Stackhouse could go back to Dallas after 30 days. Well, not any more my friends. David Stern and friends stepped in and said “no way now” thus Stackhouse is no longer a part of this trade and the trade is probably dead as New Jersey has no interest in accepting another player who has more guaranteed money than the $2mm they had to pony up to buy out Stackhouse and release him.

The NBA salary cap is almost impossible to understand without a partner from Coopers & Lybrand sitting next to you. Because of their salary cap and its complexities, it is very difficult to do trades in the NBA. Ah, who cares anyway really. Watch the last 5 minutes of regular season and first round playoff games, wait until they get down to 8 teams left in the playoffs and then pay attention. To me this is what the NBA has reduced itself to these days.
