First Alan Faneca, a guard, gets $40mm over 5 yrs from the NY Jets. In the interim the Jets had already traded for Carolina disappointment Kris Jenkins (DT), then they try to trade Dwayne Robertson to Cincinnati..whoa hold on Jets you’re going too fast for us. Oh yea, Damien Woody, come on up here and play RT for us. Forget that the Detroit Lions didn’t think enough of you to keep you or that you played C and G for most of your career other than 5, counter them, 5 starts at RT. The Jets want to pay you an average salary of $4mm per year to play RT in New York.
But…here comes the best one of all, the Jets signed 27 yr old OLB/DE Calvin Pace and all of his 14 career sacks for 6 yrs and $42mm with a $20mm signing bonus, making Mr. Pace the highest paid LB in NFL history.
I will say this for the Jets management, there are either hidden geniuses or morons, right now I am leading toward the latter. Pace played OLB for 1-yr in Arizona and the Jets are paying him an average salary of $7mm per season. Wow, wow and wow again.
I now understand a bit more why it’s been almost 40 years since this organization has played in a Super Bowl. Let’s face it when someone says poorly run NFL organization after the Cardinals, the Jets along with the Bengals and a few select others are definitely in the team picture. I know the Jets fans will have every reason in the book to believe that this was a good move but it wasn’t. Keep in mind, your team is being quarterbacked by Kellon Clemons, another guy who has potential. If you’ve been reading along with my posts, you know what potential means right.
I would love to hear from some Jets fans to see if they are drinking the Kool-Aid on these moves?

That cup of Mangini-Ade sure tastes good right now! The Jets are re-building both interior lines right in front of our eyes. No doubt both Pace and Faneca will be worth every penny. Emil totally underestimates the credentials of Pace and only comments on the financial aspect of the Faneca deal (oh yeah, he thinks 31 is old also).
So, why are they doing this? Every Jet fan knows the team needs some playmakers. The only way they will get them is via Free Agency or perhaps a Trade. Given the Jets performance last year, why would an ‘A’ player want to join the Jets? These guy thrive on their own stats.
By rebuilding both the O and D Lines, the Jets are announcing that runners will be able to run and pass receivers will be able to be thrown to as the QB will be afforded more time in the pocket.
Thus, they have given themselves at least a chance at landing some name offensive talent. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet. Let’s see what happens and I have faith that the Green and White will nail down a 10-6 record and get into the Play-offs.

Listen, I didn’t say 31 was old, God I hope not I’m 39 but it is the “back nine” of an NFL career and by most accounts paying $8mm a year to a 31 yr old guard is too much. I am a fan like you so I don’t mind if you want to be a fan in this conversation but the facts are that your team the Jets were 4-12 last year and outscored by almost 100 pts. Signing players like Faneca and Woody will not be the foundation for rebuilding this team, this has been proven.
You build NFL teams through the draft and supplement through free agency. Let’s look at the teams with the best records last year, New England, Green Bay, Dallas, Indy and of course the Giants. All those teams have the core of their talent coming through the draft. Dallas and Green Bay were two of the three youngest teams in the league last season and they both went 13-3.
You have to look at the financial aspects of a deal when you have a salary cap, this isn’t baseball. Thus if the Jets are spending $8mm on a guard and $5mm on a RT that means they have less to spend on RBs, WRs, TEs…all of which they need last time I watched them play.
The only saving grace for the Jets organization is that there is one team out there dumber than them, Oakland. Oakland just felt compelled to pay a guy, Jevon Walker, who is about to turn 30 and coming off some serious injuries an average salary of over $9mm a year to play WR. This is more than Moss or Owens makes, now that’s dumb.
As for Pace, the guy had one good year, he may be great but they overpaid and made a bet. We’re not talking Shawn Merriman or Demarcus Ware here, we’re talking about a guy who had 8 or 9 sacks one year playing OLB, it was a silly financial move, one the Jets have proven to be good at over the last 40 years.
