The Big-12 Conference features another new coach in a high profile position.  Bo Pelini makes the jump from the swamp to the heartland when he leads the Cornhuskers into the 2008 season.  My free Big 12 College Football Picks went 23-20 a season ago.

This Week’s Picks:

Western Michigan v. Nebraska
Saturday 7 P.M. est
.

Is the cupboard bear at Nebraska?  No,  not entirely but I expect a rough season for this bunch.  Only 12 starters return and they will be breaking in a new quarterback.  Let’s say it together folks,  new coach and new quarterback makes for a bad combo in week one of a college football season.  The Cornhuskers open at home which makes it a little easier,  however,  they are favorites against a Western Michigan team that won’t stand down.  The Broncos will come into Lincoln looking to kick up dust and take advantage of a situation.  A win here will do wonders for their program and they know it.  I exect to see Western Michigan going balls to the wall in this one.  They were a losing team a season ago at 5-7,  however they return 18 starters including QB Tim Hiller.  Last year’s defense was not all that good but with 10 starters returning they should have their act together.  A straight up loss for Nebraska here would not surprise the heck out of me.

Illinois v. Missouri
Saturday 8:30 P.M. est

This will be the biggest game in this conference this week.  Much is expected out of Missouri this season and rightfully so.  The Tigers were exceptional in 2007 and much of that teams returns for 2008.  The big things is that the defense returns 10 starters.  Offense gets most of the attention in that town but the truth of the matter is that if the defense doesn’t get the ball back into the hands of Chase Daniels and company,  the Tigers aren’t going anywhere.  I fully expect the defense to get that job done in this game and throught the year.  Missour is looking for the glory this season and I think they will chase it hard.  Illinois returns 12 starters including Juice Williams but I don’t know that they are ready to go on the road and acheive this grand task.  Missouri is the better team and I am going to back them playing this game at home.

Wilson Says:  Missouri (-9)

Florida Atlantic v. Texas
Saturday 7 P.M.

Believe it or not,  this is a tough one to pick.  Howar Schnellenberger’s squad will pack their lunch box (give me some points for being able to spell Schnellenberger!).  However,  I don’t know that they are really on Texas’ level.  18 starters return but I am thinking that oddsmakers built that into the line in this contest.  Texas is only returning 10 starters but Colt McCoy is there and Longhorns never have any trouble getting in talent.  I think Florida Atlantic plays strong for two quarters but then unravels in the 2nd half of this contest.  Take Texas

Wilson Says: Texas (-24)
