Roger Clemens testifying on Capitol HillBrian McNamee trying to get it straight

We all misremember some time.  I am a confessed New York Yankee fan having been born in New York and spending most of my first 10 years there.  However,  there was just some measure of satisfaction watching Roger Clemens squirm in his seat and repeatedly lick his lips on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.  Completely caught off guard by the statements made to the committee by friend Andy Pettitte,  Clemens found himself in an unfamiliar position.   Clemens looked like a rookie pitcher getting ready to take on the heart of the 1941 Yankees batting order.  His incesant use of the term “misremeber” had viewers and listeners scurrying to their Webster’s Dictionary to see if you can even do something like that for real.  Turns out that you can and his buddy Pettitte has been doing it like crazy of late according to the burly Cy Young Award winning Texan.

Doning the military haircut and a feisty attitude,  Clemens came out hard with a strong opening statement talking about clearing his name and being angry.  Only thing missing was some fatigues and a knife between his teeth.  From that point on however,  Clemens looked as though he need some relief pitching.   Several Congressmen hurled some tough questions Clemens’ way and Maryland Democrat Elijah Cummings told Clemens straight up,  “I am having a hard time believing you.”   Cumming joins 67% of America including yours truly on that note.

So far we have Chuck Knoblauch saying he was injected with HGH,  we have Andy Pettitte saying he was injected with HGH and Debbie Clemens saying she was injected with HGH supplied by Brian McNamee but Roger Clemens NOOOOOOO!  Why does Roger look like the 10 year old who was the only one at home and is telling mommy he doesn’t know who broke that vase?

I have said this all along,  Major League Baseball had no rule against it,  many were taking it, so if your name comes up and you did it,  admit it quickly and let them move on to the next guy.  People hardly talk about Jason Giambi anymore.  It seems the majority of the country has given Andy Pettitte a pass.   Chuck Knoblauch will still be more remembered for taking out ticket holders in the front row with his attempted throws to first base than he will for his admitted HGH use.  I just don’t know why some of these guys just can’t just admit it and move on.  The majority of America does not care unless two things happen.   First the steroid and HGH use is going to continue in the sport at an alarming rate or you sit up there and lie about it.  When you lie,  now we get really interested and that’s where Mr. Clemens has us right now.

I will give Clemens this.  At least he didn’t go in there and point his finger at anyone while lying and at least he admitted that he knew how to speak English.    I think we all would just like to “Misremember’ this part of baseball history and move on but the denials keep this issue in the headlines.

You determine greatness through comparisons against peers such as class rank in school. Baseball had a steroid/PED era and my guess is that well over 50% of the players tried PEDs. It is certain that Clemens is one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, with or without steroids. What I and many like me want to know now is whether the Rocket is a liar and a hypocrit? I want to believe Clemens because I like and admire what he has done in his career as a baseball fan. Admittedly, it is hard to believe Clemens though I would think that his attorneys would have warned him what lying to Congress could mean to him.

On the other hand, McNamee has nothing to lose with his testimony as he would be in a world of trouble anyway had he lied to George Mitchell thus if he’s lying he has no choice but to continue to perpetuate the lie.
